Re-reading Will of the Empress, and can I just say how much I love this book? I don’t know if I fully appreciated the social commentary the first time I read it (still in high school), I was so caught up in wanting my foster sibling foursome to love each other again.

Augh, but Tamora Pierce. Tamora Pierce. I saw her at a con in January and she said when she wrote this book there were parent groups who wanted her to tone down certain elements, and she hated that she had to compromise with them. In Namorn, where most of this book takes place, there’s a “tradition” wherein a man can kidnap a woman and essentially hold her until she either escapes or is forced to sign a marriage contract, handing over any rights she has into the hands of her husband. If she tries to escape after the contract has been signed, her husband can appeal to any law enforcement and she will be returned to him. Only a woman’s liege lord/lady can dissolve the marriage contract.

Worse, the Empress doesn’t condemn the tradition because although she was kidnapped twice, she managed to escape both times without signing a contract. She believes that if a woman is strong-willed, she will escape as well.

Even if Tammy did have to tone down elements of this book, I think the commentary of rape culture is still effective, particularly so in the following passage. Sandry was kidnapped by one of her suitors, and managed to escape with her foster siblings’ help. She goes back to her estate, where another suitor approaches her, and she’s rightly paranoid about his intentions. Sandry’s cousin, Ambros, thinks this unfair:

“You judge us all by the actions of a few, cousin.”

Ealaga sighed. “Really, my dear husband, for a man who is so clever, you can be so shortsighted. What else is she supposed to do, when any unmarried woman in western Namorn must live her life and judge all men by those few who have successfully stolen women away? Each time a man succeeds, we place our daughters and sisters under new safeguards. We put their lives under new restrictions. We give them new signs that a man in whose company they find themselves might plan to kidnap them. Don’t we teach our women to view all men according to the actions of a few?”
